BEHIND THE LENS

Finding the extraordinary in the overlooked

I'm James Wolfisz — a macro photographer based in Welwyn, Hertfordshire, obsessed with the textures, patterns and details that most eyes pass over without a second glance.

THE STORY

Data by day, bark and leaf by weekend

By day I work as a technology manager building cutting edge data platforms — systems designed to process and reveal patterns hidden in vast amounts of information. It turns out that's not so different from what I do with a camera.

Photography found me nearly twenty years ago and never let go. What began as a general passion gradually narrowed — first to nature, then to close-up work, and finally to the world of macro photography where a square centimetre of bark becomes an entire landscape and the veins of a single leaf tell a story of seasons.

There is something quietly profound about slowing down enough to see what is actually there. The ordinary world — the trees we walk past every day, the leaves underfoot in autumn, the weathered surfaces of ancient woodland — contains extraordinary beauty that most of us never stop to notice. My work is an attempt to show you what you've been missing.

"The Extra Ordinary exists to make you look twice — at the bark on the tree you pass every morning, at the leaf you nearly stepped on, at the world that has been extraordinary all along."

    In the field

Every image begins with a walk in the Hertfordshire countryside and beyond. I shoot with a dedicated macro lens on a 45 megapixel camera, capturing detail invisible to the naked eye.

    In post

Each image is carefully edited to preserve the tonal depth and texture of the original. No filters, no artificial enhancement — just considered adjustments that honour what the lens captured.

THE COLLECTIONS

The Bark & Wood collection

The Bark & Wood collection explores the surfaces of trees — the furrows of ancient oak, the papery white of silver birch, the deeply ridged armour of pine. Each image is an abstract study in time and weather, revealing the extraordinary detail hiding in plain sight on trees we walk past every day.

A second collection — Leaf & Foliage — is coming soon.
